Castor Oil Compresses: What Are They and Why Should You Try Them?

Are you looking for a simple ritual you can do at home that truly supports your body from the inside out? Castor oil compresses are one of the oldest methods of natural health care - used for centuries and now being rediscovered by advocates of a holistic approach to the body.

What is a castor oil compress?

It’s a piece of flannel or cotton soaked in cold-pressed castor oil, which is applied directly to the skin - most often around the liver, abdomen, or lymph nodes. The compress is covered with a protective cloth and a hot water bottle or heating pad for 30–60 minutes.

It sounds simple - because it is simple. And that is precisely its strength.

What is a castor oil compress used for?

1. Supporting the lymphatic system

The lymphatic system does not have its own pump like the heart - it relies on movement and flow. Castor oil compresses can stimulate the production of lymphocytes (white blood cells) and support natural lymphatic drainage. A study published in The Townsend Letter for Doctors showed an increase in lymphocyte count within a few hours of applying the compress - suggesting improved immune activity.

2. Support for liver function and detoxification

Compresses placed over the liver can improve liver enzyme function and bile flow - which is essential for natural detoxification processes and hormonal balance. The liver is one of the hardest-working organs - it processes toxins, metabolizes hormones, and produces bile. Anything that supports it contributes to the overall well-being of the entire body.

3. Gut Health and Relief from Constipation

One of the oldest uses of castor oil is to relieve constipation. Packs applied to the abdomen can support peristalsis (bowel movement) and reduce bloating. A study published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice (2011) showed significant improvement in older adults with constipation with regular use of packs.

4. Hormonal Balance and Menstrual Discomfort

Castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties. Applied regularly to the lower abdomen, it can help relieve menstrual cramps and support reproductive health. This is one of the reasons why castor oil compresses are so popular among women seeking natural ways to support their menstrual cycle.

How to make a castor oil compress - step by step

What you’ll need:

- Cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil

- A piece of flannel or cotton (palm-sized or larger)

- A protective cloth

- A hot water bottle or heating pad

Instructions:

1. Soak the flannel in castor oil so that it is damp but not dripping

2. Place it on the target area - the liver (right side under the ribs), the abdomen, or the lymph nodes

3. Cover it with a protective cloth

4. Place a warm bottle or hot water bottle on top

5. Relax for 30–60 minutes

6. Repeat 3–5 times a week for best results

Finally, drink some cleavers tea

Who should exercise caution?

Castor oil compresses are safe for most people, but not for everyone:

- Pregnant women - castor oil may stimulate uterine contractions

- Active infections or open wounds at the application site

- Allergy to castor oil - test on a small patch of skin before first use

Home compress + in-studio massage - synergy

Castor oil compresses are a great complement to regular massage - especially lymphatic massage, which mechanically supports lymph flow and relieves the immune system. Combining both methods can produce results that neither would achieve as quickly on its own.
